The Giant's Causeway is a World Heritage Site and Irelands top tourist attraction. It is made up from approximately 38,000 hexagonal shaped basalt stone columns and was, according to legend, built by the Irish Giant, Finn McCool, to enable him to cross to Scotland. In reality it is the result of the cooling and shrinking of molten lava from a vast volcanic eruption, which formed the Antrim Plateau 60 million years ago. The story of the Causeway, both legend and fact, is told in the adjacent Visitor Centre, an excellent starting point for a visit to the stones.
